Celebrate the opening of the Jordan Mill Pond Fishway in Connecticut at 10 a.m. on June 2 in Waterford, CT. Volunteers are also needed to assist with restoring the riverbank that was disturbed during construction. For more information contact Liz Kowalski at lkowalski@cfenv.org.

CAC Mtg. Features LIS Historian and Horseshoe Crab Researcher

The June 14 meeting of the Long Island Sound Citizens Advisory Committee will include presentations by Marilyn Weigold, a local author and Pace University history professor, and Jennifer Mattei, Chair of the Biology Department of Sacred Heart University. Weigold, the author of two books on Long Island Sound will speak about the socio-economic history of Long Island Sound. Mattei will discuss Project Limulus, a tagging program to monitor the horseshoe crab in Long Island Sound. The CAC meets at the University of Connecticut in Stamford at 10 a.m.

State Web sites
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CTDEP) have new, easier to navigate Web sites. They can be found at www.dec.ny.gov for NYSDEC and www.ct.gov/dep for CTDEP.

Marine Educators Meeting: The New York State Marine Education Association is holding their annual conference on June 3 at the American Museum of Natural History and the South Street Seaport. For more information visit www.nysmea.org. LISS materials will be distributed to all participants.

Bay Day: The Bay Day festival in Oyster Bay is on June 3 at The Waterfront Center. Come join the fun and try activities including free kayaking and sailing. For more information visit www.thewaterfrontcenter.org.

Sweetbriar Fair: The Wildlife and Craft Fair at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown, NY, a day of fun and education, is being held June 9. Activities include entertainment, crafts, games, face painting, animal shows, and vendors. LISS will staff an exhibit and materials table. For more information visit www.sweetbriarnc.org.

Bronx River Trips: The Bronx River Alliance is offering a number of paddling trips in June and July. For more information visit www.bronxriver.org.

Horseshoe Crab Conference: Dowling College in Oakdale, NY is hosting the International Conference on the Biology, Ecology and Conservation of Horseshoe Crabs on June 11-14. For more details on the conference contact Traci D’Alessio at 631-244-3420.

Biodiversity Summit: NYSDEC in conjunction with Audubon New York host a Watershed Biodiversity Summit for the Lower Hudson, Long Island Bays and Atlantic Ocean on June 12 at the Prospect Park Audubon Center Boathouse in Brooklyn, NY from 9-5. The purpose is to initiate a draft of a five year action plan for Species of Greatest Conservation Need. For more information contact Jason Smith at jysmith@gw.dec.state.ny.us.

EPA’s Office of Water has released the Nonpoint Source Outreach Toolbox, a comprehensive set of Web-based resources, designed to assist communities with effective watershed education and outreach activities. The toolbox is online at www.epa.gov/nps/toolbox.

Grant Opportunities

Invasive Species:
NYSDEC offers grants to eradicate terrestrial and aquatic invasive species. Proposals will be accepted until June 29. For more details visit www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/habitat/erad.html. Also BASF, the chemical company is offering grants for invasive vegetation management. Deadline for applications is July 12. For more information, visit BASF funding opporuntities.

Nature of Learning: The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is offering “Nature of Learning” grants for partnerships, curriculum, stewardship and professional development. Applications must be postmarked by June 15. For more information visit the nature of learning grant page at NFWF’s Web site.
